Fall Fixes – Part 2: Finished Living Spaces Before the Holidays? It's Possible!

Fix - A measure to resolve or to arrange for a solution - and to make a decision.
— Oxford Dictionary

It’s mid-October which means just one thing; the days are getting shorter and there’s a limited amount of time to accomplish major interior changes before the holidays. This doesn’t have to prohibit you from slipping in some beautiful solutions for freshening up your home in the nick of time.

Depending on what you may already own, it could be that an in-stock rug or a quick-ship sofa and chairs can offer a beautiful foundation for filling that spartan room. If the walls are empty, there are talented, local artists who are upping their inventory in order to help add color and visual stories to enjoy for years to come. Nothing compares to the glow of good lighting and the architectural interest they bring to rooms. Even if the side tables are a little loved or plain, stacks of books, (and not the itty-bitty kind), along with some art glass and framed photos can make them sing until replacements can be sourced. Do you see the possibilities?

Here’s the key thing to keep in mind: Be open to an imaginative design that can be pulled together in short order.

What exactly does this mean?

Though you may want the world to be your oyster, realistic expectations are a must. No vacillating over details. You have to be a good decision-maker and communicator. Custom options, such as specialty painted finishes or anything requiring extra time for labor or fabrication, aren’t going to be an option, though you can still have one-of-a-kind design by using antiques or vintage pieces. More than likely you won’t be able to have custom window treatments but it’s okay to design the room with them in mind for a future installation. Quick doesn’t have to equal cheap quality, either. Even though there may be a mix of pricing options, we don’t believe in suggesting products that will become pain points, later, due to a fast decision.

What you’ll receive can still be amazing!

You’ll still get a great design plan created by an experienced design pro. You’ll get to share some style preferences while letting go of the stress of figuring it all out and trying to put it together. You’re going to save time so you can focus on all of the other things that are important, especially this time of the year. You’ll feel wonderful walking into a space that’s finished and ready for you to not only receive your special guests and family, you’ll get to enjoy it for more than a season.

If you need a bit of inspiration, I’ve put together a few design boards with items from trade vendors and some favorite artists. Most are readily available to my clients within four weeks, if they’re still in stock at the order date. (And they often have faster delivery than some of the online/catalog companies.) I’m always looking for sources who offer amazing client experiences.

I’m heading to the High Point Market, by the end of this week, and I’ll be reporting - via Instagram - some of my favorite finds. My designs embrace the “non-trend”. I look for a mix of everything from modern to classic to one-of-a-kind antiques. The individual’s style is reflected in current projects. For example, my team is completing a kitchen in a 1940’s Federal Style home and the cabinets are a lightly rubbed black. Another kitchen project, in an early 1900’s Craftsman, has cabinets in a velvety, deep moss green. Since I imagined the future interiors would pulled from these main gathering spaces, these cabinets were important elements to consider.
